What the midface ratio is
The midface is the region between the eye line and the base of the nose. We define the midface ratio as the vertical distance from the eye-centre line to landmark 2 at the base of the nose, divided by the distance between the two eye centres, after aligning the eye line in pixel space.

How to read your number

Eye line position is measured upward from the chin as a fraction of contour height.
A shorter midface and a longer midface are both normal ranges. Neither is better; each reads differently in photos, which is why cameras exaggerate them.
Why your photo moves this number more than your face does
The midface is the most camera-sensitive part of the face, and this is the key point of this page:
- Focal length and distance. A phone held close to the face enlarges the nose and centre of the face — the midface measures longer and wider than it is. Step back two metres and the same face measures differently. This is the largest single factor.
- Head tilt. Chin down compresses the midface; chin up lengthens it.
- Lens height. Shooting from below the eye line lengthens the midface; from above, it shortens it.
- Expression. A wide smile pulls the midface up and changes its measured height.
Use the same distance, the same lens and the same head position each time, and you can compare readings. Change them and you are measuring the camera.
Can you change your midface ratio?
The bony structure of the midface is not something you change with styling, and we do not recommend procedures. What genuinely changes the reading:
- Camera distance and lens — the biggest lever, and it is free.
- Lens height — shooting at eye level reports the most stable number.
- Hair and facial hair volume — a fringe or beard changes what the frame reads as the midface boundary in a photo.
- Glasses frames — a bridge placed low or high shifts the visual centre of the midface.
